About the Community
The Edge Community Project In the Summer of 2006 the Project Leader, Captain Richard Cooke CA, and his family moved on to the estate and began work in Selby CP School. He has given the bulk of his time to work with the school, in leading Collective Worship, teaching RE, assisting in classes and working with groups and individuals as part of the inclusion team; he leads schools services at Christmas, Easter and Harvest. The school has seen significant improvement over the last 5 years and is one of the top 100 improving schools in England. With the help of members of St James church Richard has developed:
Through all this work we have built good relationships and real trust with many across the estate. People have been loved and supported, and become more open to Jesus and Christian faith. Richard has also been involved in:
As well as being an associate member of staff at the school, Richard works in cooperation with Surestart Children's Centre, the NSPCC (soon to close), North Yorks Credit Union and other agencies.
At the start of 2009 God called three families to join Richard, Kath and their children in establishing a new, culturally relevant Christian Community – the Edge Community – on the estate. Meeting weekly to pray, plan and grow together they run a monthly Fresh Expression of Church with families on Sunday afternoons, and occasional social activities. They are a key support to Richard. A few families have very much become regulars, with others coming in and out; over-all numbers are slowly and steadily growing. Our shared vision is to see this grow and develop into a vibrant and sustainable Christian community for local people; our hope is that we will grow numerically, that people will become disciples and that our outreach will grow beyond families with primary and pre-school children.
