Edge Community Project Vision
Our monthly Gatherings continue to attract a small but faithful group of families. In September we explored the difference between how the world values us and how God values us; unlike OK! magazine, God looks on the heart. With camera, laptop and printer we made our own I'm OK! magazine front covers, with photos of ourselves and Bible verses instead of headlines. We sang God loves me, & wrote paper flower prayers and watched them open when placed in a large pool of water. As always we ended by eating together, and had a special time. Through this we are building genuine and Christian community, where love is shared and God's word is gently and appropriately communicated.
Kath and Richard have good relationships with some families, but who are reluctant to come to anything overtly Christian; as a community we look to plug the gap through offering activities where relationships can be built. Over the last few months. In May we had a coach trip to Lotherton Hall, and were constantly asked when the next one would be; it really felt as though God was with us. In June we joined in the Town Fun Day, and where most others were raising money had a stall offering free games and crafts, which was very well received. We've had two barbecues, with good attendances and a fantastic Family Film Night, sharing home-made snacks and making popcorn. "Thanks for this evening - it was just what we needed." texted one mum afterwards. In October the Community went away on retreat; they continue to seek God's guidance as they journey on.
Developing a new, culturally relevant Christian community has been likened to Gromit laying the tracks as he goes along in film The Wrong Trousers. Pray that Richard and the Edge Community would continue to move forward very much guided by the Holy Spirit; that they would discern when faithfulness and patience are required as they wait for the Lord to bring 'refreshing rain', or whether they need a new or different approach. Continue to ask for strength and protection for them all.
The Mission Shaped Ministry year-long course is now running in York Diocese and Richard is part of the team leading and teaching people. He writes, "The MSM course aims to equip people and churches in planting and sustaining fresh expressions of church."
"Fresh expressions of church is a way of describing the planting of new congregations or churches which are different in ethos and style from the church which planted them; because they are designed to reach a different group of people than those already attending the original church." writes Bishop Graham Cray. "The emphasis is on planting something which is appropriate to its context, rather than cloning something which works elsewhere." Pray please that Richard would both help others and himself learn from being a part of this.
